Five Things You Can Do to Balance Your Self-care

When your self-care is out of balance, you’re likely to feel out of sync with much of the rest of your life as a caregiver. Trying just a few of these ideas can shift your perspective on self-care.

Assess What You’ve Eaten

What exactly have you eaten so far today? Or did you forget completely? That’s a lot more common than you might think. Take the time to eat something that has both protein and carbs and drink a full glass of water. Once you’ve got one good meal or snack into you, you can be in a better frame of mind to do that again later in the day.

Take a Fitness Break

It can be really stressful to tell yourself that you need to fit a workout in every day. Instead, try to remind yourself at least once a day to take a fitness break. It might be as simple as doing a few stretches or walking in place for five minutes. If you’re willing to commit a little bit more, try finding something you enjoy and schedule time for it.

Declutter a Little Bit

Even if you think it doesn’t bother you, clutter can distract your brain subconsciously. You probably don’t have time for a full-on several day decluttering project, but you can tackle one tiny area at a time. Today it might be that hot spot on the kitchen counter. Tomorrow it might be the junk drawer. Set a timer and just declutter for five minutes. As you gradually carve out more space from the clutter, your brain will thank you.

Check in with Yourself

Now and again throughout the day, check in with yourself. Stop and ask yourself how you’re doing, what you’re feeling, and what you need right now. At first, this might feel awkward but listen to what your answers are. When you start to trust that you’ll give yourself what you need, the answers will come to you more easily.

Reach out to Someone

If you’re not already reaching out regularly to friends and family members, try to make the time to do so. You don’t have to have lengthy conversations, either. Checking in with a quick series of text messages can help you to remember that you’re connected to people who love you and who care about what’s going on with you.

When you take the time to focus a little bit on you, you’ll be in a better space emotionally, physically, and mentally to take care of your aging family member. To keep from overwhelming yourself, try adding just one of these changes to your day. When it starts to become second nature, add another.

Evan Loevner, CEO

As a former hospital administrator, I launched Aviva with the goal of having a more focused, direct impact on the delivery of care than I could ever accomplish within a hospital setting. For me, the joy of running an organization like Aviva In-Home Care is having the ability to positively improve the lives of individuals needing customized care. As a passionate San Francisco resident, I know that many local seniors can benefit from new approaches to in-home care, that will bring them more connection to the community, and provide families with a greater sense of comfort that their loved one is indeed matched with an ideal caregiver. This starts by including the family throughout the care planning process, a key component of the concept of “family-centered care,” which has been adopted by top medical centers. A strong communication loop between family, the caregiver, Aviva management, and community healthcare practitioners is essential for ensuring that all the needs of the client are met. While this may not sound like a novel concept, it is not commonly practiced within the home care community.

At Aviva, we also use the latest in health technology to maximize opportunities for communication between all members of our client’s care circles. We utilize nursing oversight to ensure that we are in compliance with physician orders, and that our careplans are being properly administered. Lastly, Aviva is a proud member of The Senior’s Choice, a national network of leading home care agencies that share best practices and focus on continual improvement.

As owner of the business, I also promise to you my direct involvement in your loved ones care, and will always make myself available for feedback and improvements in our service. I look forward to working with you and your loved one on creating a care plan that is perfectly suited to the family's needs. Thank you for considering Aviva as your care partner.
