Exercise isn’t something that everyone looks forward to, especially on a daily basis. But as a caregiver, you need to make self-care, and particularly exercise a priority. When you’re healthy you can do more to help your senior to stay as healthy as possible, too.
Make an Appointment with Yourself
When you make an appointment with anyone else in your life, that’s a solid event in your calendar. An appointment with yourself needs to have the same weight. Set it up in your schedule that you’ve got a daily appointment with yourself to get in a workout. Even if you have to drag yourself there kicking and screaming, keep that appointment.
Break it Up into Small Workouts
If one half-hour block of time is something you just can’t stomach yet, try breaking up your workout into several smaller ones. Every little bit of extra movement that you do during the day counts toward your overall goal. The idea is to get that movement in, however, you can convince yourself to do it.
Hire Elder Care Providers
Sometimes you really don’t have the time to set aside for a workout. That’s when you need to go a little deeper in solving the problem. If you hire elder care providers to take over for you during the same part of the day, you have no more reason not to focus on yourself and on working out. That standing appointment becomes a lot easier for you to get to every day.
Find Someone Else Who’s Counting on You
For some caregivers, it’s not enough to have yourself depending on you. Another option is to make an exercise date with a friend or another family member. When you know that someone else is relying on you to show up and to follow through, it’s a lot more difficult to flake out and give up on working out. This is also a great way to make sure that you’re staying in touch with friends and keeping yourself from isolating.
When you do make the time to exercise regularly, you’re going to see benefits in all areas of your life, not just in caregiving. You’re going to find that it’s a lot easier to deal with all the challenges that come your way, which is going to make a big difference. Don’t let yourself off the hook with excuses or you’ll never get into a routine.
